Our School History & Why it Was Founded

Mariahilf Integrated Secondary School, Kasenene was founded to respond to the need for accessible and quality secondary education in the rural communities of Kyegegwa District, Uganda.

Many young people in the area successfully complete primary school but face difficulties continuing their studies due to long distances to secondary schools, limited financial resources, and lack of nearby educational facilities. As a result, many students are forced to end their education too early.

Recognizing this challenge, Bernard Rabwoni Akiiki initiated the establishment of Mariahilf Integrated Secondary School so that young people in Kasenene and surrounding villages could have the opportunity to continue their education close to home.

The school officially opened on 10 February 2026 and began its first academic year with 51 students in Form 1 and Form 2, welcoming both boys and girls as day and boarding students.

The school follows an integrated educational approach guided by the motto “Mind, Heart, and Hands,” which emphasizes the development of intellectual abilities, moral values, and practical life skills.

Mariahilf Integrated Secondary School works alongside its sister institutions in Kasenene:

Cause of Our Joy Junior School – providing primary education

Mariahilf Medical Clinic – offering healthcare services to the community

Together, these institutions contribute to the educational, social, and health development of the local community.

About Our Founder

Fr. Bernard Rabwoni Akiiki, a Catholic priest of Fort Portal Diocese, ordained on 30th June 2018. His own journey through hardship and determination inspired him to create opportunities for others.

“I was always very interested in going to school because I wanted to become a priest or a lawyer. But school was more than 10 kilometers away. I walked this distance barefoot, and we had no proper buildings—just trees for classrooms. Despite poverty and many challenges, I was able to study up to PhD level. That’s why I founded this school.” – Fr. Bernard
